President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the memorial of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary on Tuesday. The memorial - Sadaiv Atal - has been developed by 'Atal Smriti Nyas Society' near Rajghat in the national capital.
President Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and PM Modi were among the dignitaries who paid floral tributes to the former statesman. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and family members of Vajpayee also offered flowers at the lotus-shaped memorial.
Paying tribute to Vajpayee, PM Modi posted a video clip on on Twitter and said that his government is committed towards creating a India that the former PM had envisaged.
"Tributes to Atal Ji on his Jayanti. We reiterate our commitment towards creating the India he dreamt of," PM Modi said in his tweet.
About 'Sadaiv Atal'
# Land was made available for the memorial at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry.
# It was constructed by the Centre Public Works Department (CPWD) at a cost of Rs 10.51 crore. The project was funded by the Atal Smriti Nyas Society.
# The memorial is spread over 1.5 acres of land at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, where Vajpayee was cremated on August 17.
# The memorial reflects the former prime minister's personality as a poet, humanist, statesman and a great leader, said senior BJP leader and Atal Smriti Nyas Society president Vijay Kumar Malhotra.
'Sadaiv Sthal' was constructed by the Centre Public Works Department (CPWD) at a cost of Rs 10.51 crore.
# Not a single tree was cut down in developing 'Sadaiv Atal' at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, which also houses samadhis (memorials) of former presidents, prime ministers among others.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away at AIIMS after prolonged illness on August 16. He was cremated on August 17 with full state honours.
