Counting of votes for the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency is underway, and as per trends, BJP leader Babul Supriyo has taken a lead over TMC's Moon Moon Sen.
The Asansol Lok Sabha constituency went to polls on April 29 in the fourth phase of the 2019 general election.
Contesting against sitting MP Babul Supriyo of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is actor-turned-politician Moon Moon Sen of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has fielded Gouranga Chatterjee as its candidate while the Congress is represented by Biswarup Mondal.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Babul Supriyo defeated Dola Sen of TMC by receiving 36.80 per cent of the votes cast in this constituency.
The constituency is divided into seven assembly segments. It comprises of 50 per cent Hindi-speaking people while around 36 per cent of the voters are non-Bengali.
Asansol recorded a voter turnout of 73.64 per cent.
Clashes broke out in Asansol as voting was being held in the fourth round of the national election. The vehicle of BJP candidate and Union minister Babul Supriyo was vandalised outside a polling station in Barabani when a fight erupted between workers of the BJP and the state's ruling Trinamool Congress.
The seven phases of the Lok Sabha polls 2019 covered a total of 543 constituencies. Voting in the first phase was conducted on April 11.
