Srinagar: A soldier went missing when an avalanche hit an army post in Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The soldier was on surveillance duty when the avalanche struck. Another trapped soldier was rescued by a team of the Indian Army.

The avalanche, triggered by a mild earthquake, hit an army post located at an altitude of 17,500 feet in Kargil sector on March 17, an Army officer said on Saturday.

Two soldiers, who were on surveillance duty, were swept away in the avalanche, the officer said.

Immediate rescue operations were launched and one soldier was rescued, he said, adding, the second soldier was still missing. The rescued soldier was stable and recovering.

Ten soldiers were killed in an avalanche on the Siachen Glacier last month.

Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad, who was rescued and later rushed to the Army's Research and Referral Hospital (R&R) in the national capital, could not be saved despite efforts taken to revive him.
