Retired justice of the Supreme Court KT Thomas has heaped praise on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) saying “it is the Sangh that keeps Indians safe after the Army”.

In a tweet, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra claimed that Thomas even credited the RSS for freeing the country from the Emergency rule.

“If an organisation has to be given credit for freeing the country from the Emergency, I would give that to the RSS ..If asked why people are safe in India, I would say there is a Constitution, there is democracy, there is Army & fortunately the RSS,” Patra quoted Thomas as saying in his tweet.

According to media reports, the 80-year-old retired judge said this while addressing an RSS instructors' training camp in Kottayam district of Kerala on Sunday.

Thomas further applauded the RSS for imparting physical training to cadets.

“It is to defend the country and the society at the time of attacks,” Thomas, who is known for his strong opinions with regard to socio-political milieu, opined.

KT Thomas was appointed an SC judge in 1996. He was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan in 2007 for services in the field of social affairs.

He had retired from service in 2002 and lives at Muttambalam in Kottayam district. Thomas is known for presiding over the SC bench that had confirmed the death sentence in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
