At least 14 people were killed and 28 injured after a mini bus carrying a marriage party lost control and fell into a canal in the wee hours of Friday in the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 3am when the family was returning from Sakrauli village to Agra.

Early reports suggest that the driver was allegedly in a drowsy state, due to which he lost control of the mini bus, which eventually fell into a canal.

The locals around the area reportedly informed the police immediately after the accident, after which the injured victims were taken to nearby hospital.

The injured have been rushed to Jalesar primary health care centre and a major rescue operation was launched to rescue the injured.

District Magistrate Amit Kishore said compensation will be provided to the families of those killed.

Police fear the death toll could rise. Further details are awaited.

In January, at least 15 children were killed and several others injured when their school bus collided with a lorry amid dense fog on Aliganj-Paliyali road in Etah.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled and announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakhs for the next of kin of those killed.

"My thoughts are with all those who lost their loved ones in the accident in Etah, UP. May those injured in the accident recover quickly," Modi said.
