A hospital in Neemuch town in Madhya Pradesh has brought light in many people's lives, literally.
Gomabai Netralaya, a super speciality eye care hospital in Neemuch, has a record of treating blinds and performing eye transplant surgery, giving the town the name of "Netradaan Nagari" or "Eye Donation Capital of India."
The hospital receives close 15 eye donations every month.
On its website, the hospital recognises itself as "one of India's foremost Trust-run Ophthalmic Institutes in Central India."
The Netralaya was established in 1992 by GD Agrawal in the memory of his mother Gomabai Darbarilal Agrawal. Agrawal had left Neemach in 1986 for Mumbai where he established a coaching centre. Six years later, he established the hospital with one doctor which has now grown into a hub of eye surgery.
It was given a license for eye transplant in 1996 and since then, around 1500 people have been given light here.
Many of the surgeries here are performed for free.
Nearly 12-15 people get eye transplant here every month.
"Even he (GD Agrawal) must have not thought that this hospital would grow this big. It started with one doctor and now has 10 doctors. We performed all kind of surgeries related to eye, which are available at very few centres in India," Vimal Agarwal, Trusty of the Gomabai Netralaya said.
