Maharashtra: 12 dead after bus hits container on Samruddhi Expressway, PM announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia

Maharashtra: According to officials, the incident took place at 12:30 am Vaijapur area when the private bus hit a container leading to the deaths of 12 people. The bus driver lost control over the vehicle, police said.

Maharashtra: At least 12 were people killed while 23 others were injured as a bus hit a container on Samruddhi Expressway in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, formerly known as Aurangabad, police said on Sunday.

According to officials, there were 35 passengers by the private bus. The accident took place at around 12.30 am in Vaijapur area of the expressway in the district, located nearly 350 km from Mumbai, he said.

Preliminary information revealed that all the passengers were residents of Pathardi and Indiranagar in Nashik district. Some devotees from Nashik had gone for darshan at the Baba Dargah in Buldhana district. The accident took place after the darshan when the bus was heading back to Nashik when a car came across a parked truck.

The bus driver lost control over the wheels. As a result, the bus hit the container from the rear side, the official said. Twelve passengers were killed. The deceased include five men, six women and a minor girl, he said. The official said 23 others received injuries and they were admitted to a government hospital.

PM Modi offers condolences, announces compensation

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives In the accident and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased while Rs 50,000 will be provided to the injured. 

Maharashtra CM Shinde announces compensation of Rs 5 lakh

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased while stating that the expense of the treatment of the injured will be borne by the state government. His office said, "Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde announces Rs 5 lakhs ex-gratia to the families of the victims. The expense of treating the injured will be borne by the govt."
