Maharashtra: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will today hear the plea of both the factions of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) -- one led by Sharad Pawar and another by his nephew Ajit Pawar -- over the claim on the party name and symbol.
In July, ECI directed both Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar to share documents, submitted to the polling body, with each other. The first hearing in the matter before the ECI is scheduled to take place today.
In July this year, Ajit Pawar had approached the election commission and staked claim over the NCP name and symbol.
The poll body acknowledged the matter and asked both the factions to submit documents supporting their individual claims over the party name and symbols.
In its petition to the Election Commission, Ajit Pawar has asked the poll body that he should be declared as President of the NCP and allotted name and symbol as per the provisions of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
Today, it will be the first hearing of the Election Commission on the matter.
Recently, the Sharad Pawar-led faction had told the EC that there was no dispute in the party, except that a few mischievous individuals have defected from the organisation for their personal ambitions, a reference to the rebel group headed by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
