Mumbai, known for its unpredictable weather patterns, faces another bout of nature's fury as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues a warning for the next three to four hours. Following the havoc caused by strong winds and dust storms a day earlier, the IMD has cautioned residents about the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall in isolated areas within the Mumbai suburban region.

Gusty winds pose threat

Adding to the concern, gusty winds with speeds ranging between 40-50 kmph are anticipated to accompany the thunderstorms. In light of these forecasts, the IMD advises residents to exercise caution and take necessary precautions when venturing outdoors.

The IMD's advisory underscored the importance of staying informed and prepared for adverse weather conditions, emphasising the need for vigilance and proactive measures to ensure safety and well-being in the face of nature's unpredictability.

Residents are advised to take precautionary measures and stay indoors during the forecasted period to avoid any inconvenience or safety hazards posed by the adverse weather conditions.

Mumbai, Thane, Palghar on Yellow Alert: IMD issues warning

In anticipation of severe weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. Sunil Kamble, Chief of the IMD, highlighted the potential risks associated with sudden gusty winds and brief spells of intense rainfall, urging residents to remain vigilant.

Alert for rapid weather changes

Kamble cautioned that during thunderstorms, ground-level winds intensify, often accompanied by abrupt gusts, posing risks of damage. Considering the imminent threat, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on Monday. The IMD will identify vulnerable areas and times of these short-term weather events, enabling timely alerts to be issued two to three hours in advance.

Safety advisory amidst uncertain weather

In such circumstances, Kamble advised staying indoors as the safest option. Seeking shelter indoors, preferably under sturdy shade or within buildings, away from trees and hoardings, is strongly recommended when strong winds or storms occur. The onset of the monsoon is expected in Kerala on June 1st, reaching Maharashtra by June 10th or 11th.

Yellow alert extended to additional districts

Furthermore, the Regional Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Solapur, Latur-Beed, Nagpur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. The alert signifies the likelihood of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at various locations. Over the next 24 hours, scattered showers and thunderstorms are anticipated in the evening/night. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 35°C and 28°C, respectively.
