In a tragic incident, at least nine people suffered injuries after a stampede incident occurred at Mumbai's Bandra Terminus station. According to the information released, the incident occurred in the wee hours of Sunday, when the train going from Mumbai to Gorakhpur reached the platform. However, as the passengers hurried to board the train, a stampede broke out, injuring around nine people.
Significantly, all the injured passengers were admitted to Bhabha Hospital for treatment; however, the condition of 2 passengers identified as Indrajith Sahani and Noor Mohammad Shaikh is said to be critical.
About the incident
According to the civic officials, the incident was reported on Sunday, when a large number of passengers amid the festival season gathered to board the unreserved coaches of the Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express on platform no. 1 at the Bandra Terminus.
The officials said things turned worse when passengers tried to board the Antyodaya Express (having all 22 general-class coaches) while it was taken on the platform from the yard with the doors of the coaches locked from inside.
In the attempt to gather a seat in the train, a few tried to board it while it had still not stopped on the platform. This led the people to fall on the platform after colliding with the coaches or in the space between two coaches, the sources said.
"Ideally, doors of the coaches are opened after the train makes a halt at the platform, and passengers then board in a queue," a WR source said.
Moreover, in the aftermath of the incident, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and local people immediately rushed to the spot and transferred the injured to the Bhabha Hospital, where they are presently under medical supervision.
'We are inquiring for the facts'
Meanwhile, speaking of the incident, Thane Central Railway Deputy Commissioner Manoj Nana Patil said the police are inquiring for the facts. "This is a weekly train which runs every Sunday...The train is unreserved...The normal public can easily afford this train, therefore, there is a rush for this train usually...Our team was present here, but people suddenly rushed for seats... No one was critically injured in this incident...We are inquiring for the fact," the official remarked.
