A portion of a slab from a three-storey building in Vikhroli's Kannamwar Nagar No. 1 collapsed, resulting in the deaths of two senior citizens. The victims have been identified as Sharad Mhaslekar (75) and Suresh Madhalkar (78), according to PTI. Both Mhaslekar and Madhalkar were quickly transported to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital, where they were declared dead upon arrival. The building, which is partially occupied, is identified as MHADA building number 40.
"Sharad Mhaslekar (75) and Suresh Madhalkar (78) were declared dead after being rushed to nearby Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital. Further details are awaited," the official said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Building conditions under scrutiny
It remains unclear whether the building was officially recognised as being in a dilapidated state. In a related development, MHADA has released its annual list of 20 dangerous cessed buildings across the city.
MHADA's warning and safety measures
These 20 hazardous buildings collectively house 711 residents, including 494 residential and 217 non-residential occupants. MHADA has urged all occupants to vacate these buildings to prevent further tragedies.
