In a major road accident, at least seven people lost their lives while three others were injured after two cars collided on the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway (Samriddhi Mahamarg) on Friday night. The road accident took place in Jalna district, about 400 km from Mumbai. The accident occurred around 11 pm when a car entered the highway from the wrong side after refuelling and collided with another car going from Nagpur to Mumbai.
The collision between the two cars was so severe that the en route to Mumbai jumped into the air and fell on the barricade on the highway. Due to the impact of a massive collision, the passengers fell out of the car on the road. The other car was also severely damaged. Tragically, seven people in the car died on the spot.
Highway, Jalna Police swing into action
Soon after the accident, Samriddhi Highway Police and Jalna Police reached the spot. The cars were completely destroyed in the accident and a crane was deployed to remove them. Taking swift action, the injured were rushed to the district hospital for treatment.
Notably, Samruddhi Mahamarg is a partially functional six-lane and 701 km long access-controlled expressway in Maharashtra. It is one of the longest greenfield road projects in the country connecting Mumbai and the state's third-largest city Nagpur.
