A couple and their two children were killed in a deadly fire in the Nayapura area of Dewas district on Saturday morning, police confirmed. At about 4:45 a.m., the fire broke out in the milk parlour-cum-residential building, engulfing the apartment where the family lived on the upper floors.
Family caught in flames
Nahar Darwaja Police Station in-charge Manju Yadav stated, “The victims, identified as Dinesh Karpentar (35), his wife Gayatri (30), daughter Ishika (10), and son Chirag (7), died from suffocation and severe burn injuries.”
"We received information about a fire in a milk parlour in Nayapura, and a family was living in the same premises," Nahar Darwaja police station in-charge Manju Yadav told PTI.
Dinesh owned the dairy on the ground floor of the building and lived on the second floor with his family. The first floor of the building was empty.
"We are probing into the cause of the fire. The dairy was on the ground floor, and the family was on the second floor while the first floor was vacant," the official told reporters.
Suspected cause of the fire
Superintendent of Police (SP) Puneet Gehlot informed that the fire started on the ground floor and may have been caused by flammable materials stored in the dairy. “The exact cause will be determined after a forensic investigation,” he said.
Despite being on the second floor, the family could not escape due to the intensity of the fire.
Fire under control, investigation ongoing
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, but the building was already badly damaged. Authorities are investigating the real cause of the incident.
Authorities react
SP Puneet Gehlot highlighted the gravity of the tragedy and said the local administration and civic bodies were working to enhance fire safety measures to prevent similar accidents in future.
This tragic incident underscores the need for strict compliance with fire safety regulations in mixed-use buildings.
