Navratari special Day 8: Jai Maa Mahagauri

It is said that Goddess Parvati at the age of sixteen grew up to be extremely beautiful and fair complexioned. Thus she was bestowed with name Mahagauri, the Goddess with fairness, purity and deep devotion.

Maa Mahagauri is represented wearing only white clothes signifying the extreme purity. She is seen sitting on a bull like Maa Shailputri. Maa Mahagauri is seen with four hands; her upper right hand is seen carrying a Trishul, lower right hand is in Abhaya Mudra, her upper left hand is carrying a Damaru, and lower left hand is in Varada Mudra.

Maa Mahagauri is the incarnation of Goddess Parvati who traded her luxurious life with her parents to do strict penance in order to win over Lord Shiva.

Maa Mahagauri is also known as a 'Vrisharudha', as she mounts on a bull. Due to her extreme fair complexion, which is compared to moon, and the white flower Kunda, she is also known as Maa Shwetambardhara.
