Ganesha Visarjan is a much fanfare event that happens every 10th day of Ganesha Chaturthi.
It is believed that Lord Ganesha is embodied in the form of a murti or idol. The idol is therefore worshipped for a period of 10 days and on the 11th day the idol is submersed into the sea, lake or a pond.
According to pauranik shashtra, Goddess Parvati while bathing prepared a murti of 'Bal Ganesha' from exofoilation of her own skin. Then she invoked life into the idol through blessings of Lord Shiva.
Since then this has been celebrated as Ganesha Chaturthi.
On this day devotees, bring in their deity's idol and worship it for a period of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days. The on the 11th day of the end of puja, the idol is immersed into the water discarding the temporary receptacle.
The idol of Lord Ganesha is trotted around the house and in the city, before finally submerging it in water. It is said through Lord Ganesha takes away with all the negative energy and essence from around.
The entire journey is popularly know as Ganesha Visarjan, this day everyone dances and chants, "Ganpati Bappa Morya!... Mangal Murti Morya!", then finally on the bank of river, lake or pond, a small Ganesha puja is done where the idol is offered, sweets, coconut, modak and flowers before finally swaying the idol away into the water.
With this each human heart begs it's deity to come back soon again!
