It is being deduced that a deadly nerve agent, Sarin was used to carry out a heinous gas attack in Syria on Tuesday. Let us tell you, this lethal gas was discovered by the Nazis in Germany.
Originally this gas was used as a pesticide. But then the Iraqi Dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime used Sarin to gas thousands of Kurds in the northern town of Halabja back in 1988.
Here are some other deadly facts about Sarin, a lethal nerve agent.
- When inhaled or absorbed through the skin, the gas kills by paralysing the respiratory centre of the nervous system. It paralyzes the muscles around the lungs!
- Sarin can immediately lead to death by suffocation!
- Victims, who come in contact with Sarin, suffer from convulsions, breathing problems and foaming at the mouth.
- The gas is odourless and tasteless. This makes its detection difficult. Sarin can linger in the atmosphere for up to 6 hours!
- Another shocking fact is, Sarin is 26 times deadlier than the cyanide gas. Just a pin-sized droplet can kill a person!
- Inhalation of high doses of Sarin may cause death within few minutes.
- Even when the death doesn’t happen, Sarin leaves the victim permanently damaged. It damages the lungs, eyes and central nervous system.
- The most notorious Sarin attack occurred in 1988 in Kurdish city of Halabja which killed around 5,000 people.
- Sarin was accidentally discovered by Schrader, Ambros, Ruediger et Van der Linde, who was trying to develop a stronger pesticide. Later, this formula was used by Nazi military for chemical warfare.
