New calculator can predict success of kidney transplant result

A calculator can assess the chances that a given patient who received a kidney transplant from a certain living donor would have a normal functioning kidney 5-10 years after the transplantation took place.

The researchers from US have developed a calculator which can estimate the functioning of a kidney after transplantation. The study has concluded that the calculator assesses the chances that a given patient who received a kidney transplant from a certain living donor would have a normal functioning kidney 5-10 years after the transplantation took place. Researchers from the University of Michigan explained that the calculator can provide useful information to kidney transplant patients in general, but it can be specifically useful for ones who are choosing among multiple potential donors.

The lead researcher, John Kalbfeisch said that the calculator enables the calculate with compatible donor to compare the estimated graft survival of a kidney from their donor, as compared to one from another donor in the Kidney Paired Donation pool. Kidney Paired Donation pool is a process in which the patients with incompatible kidney donors can interchange their kidneys to receive a compatible one.

The team of researchers examined 2,32,705 patients listed in the database of 'Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients' from 1998 to 2012. The results indicated that the feature mismatches with respect to gender, body weight, size, genetic make-up and age led to increase in graft failure.

The findings are published in the journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
