So, the month of November is here, marking the almost-end of the year. But this isn’t the only reason why the men out there are excited about it. The month of November brings with itself the uber-chic trend of growing beard throughout the month. It is fondly known as ‘No Shave November’ and the trending radars are dominated by hashtags #NoShaveNovemebr, with heaps of pictures of men posing with their stubble. But did you try to dig deeper about this popular trend? How it went off? Who started this trend? If don’t know yet, here’s an explainer.

According to the official website of No Shave November, the Hill family from Chicago lost their father, Mathew Hill to colon cancer in November 2007. His eight children, grief-stricken, decided to start a charity that uses No-Shave November to raise money for cancer research.

The Hill family currently works with the following organisations: Prevent Cancer Foundation, Fight Colorectal Cancer and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They are striving to devise a cure for cancer.

You may be wondering ‘How does it work?’ Let’s put it like this.

Guys grow their facial hair throughout the month and avoid shaving the entire November. In the similar pattern, women grow their hair on legs, abstaining from waxing in the month of November. The money guys and girls use to spend on waxing and shaving can be donated to cancer aid organisations.

The rules of No Shave November

The rules are as simple as ABC! You have to abstain from shaving and waxing for a month. And any money that you could’ve spent on waxing/shaving can be donated to the cause. If you cannot don the hairy look, go on and support someone else to take up the task. You can sign up yourself on the official website of No Shave November.
