Acclaimed Hindi fiction writer and essayist Krishna Sobti died on Friday, that is, 25th January at the age of 93 due to prolonged illness, her family said. Actress Ekavali Khanna who has appeared in films like Veere Di Wedding, Bioscopewala, and Dear Dad is the grandniece of the novelist. As per media reports, the actress said: "She died at a hospital here today. Her health had deteriorated in the last few months and she had been in and out of the hospital."
Ekavali further added: "She launched her new book in the hospital last month. Despite her ill health, she was always discussing arts, creative processes, and life."
Sahitya Akademi award winner in 1980 for her novel Zindaginama, Sobti was also conferred with the Jnanpith in 2017 for her contribution to Indian literature.
Sobti, born on 18th February 1925, was best known for her 1966 novel Mitro Marajani, which talked about a married woman's sexuality. Her other acclaimed works include Surajmukhi Andhere Ke, Yaaron Ke Yaar, Daar Se Bichchuri, and Ai Ladaki to name a few.
Adding to her achievements, in the year 2005, her Dil-o-Danish, translated into The Heart Has Its Reasons in English by Reema Anand and Meenakshi Swami of Katha Books, won the Crossword Award in the Indian Language Fiction Translation category.
