Parsi community in India is celebrating their New Year, also known as Pateti or Navroz/ Nowruz. Parsi community and their culture are less known among the majority in India and this may be because of their dwindling population. Parsis follow Zoroastrianism, founded by Zarathustra in Persia. The Parsi New Year is also known as Jamshedi Nowruz, named after the legendary king of Persia, Jamshed. The kind founded the Parsi calendar, however, people in India follow the Shahenshahi calendar, which does not count leap years. Hence, Parsis in India and Pakistan celebrate New Year around 200 days after it is observed across the globe.
Parsi New Year falls in the month of August and on this day people pray for their wealth, health and prosperity. They decorate their houses, visit the Fire Temple and prepare delicious feast. Most popular delicacies prepared on this day are meethi sev dahi, marghi na farcha (crispy fried chicken), mora dal chawal (also called dhan daar), patra nu machli, sali boti, berry pulao, jardaloo chicken, kid gosht, machchi no patio, mutton pulao, saas ni machchi among others.
