Karnataka Cabinet approves renaming of Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South

The Ramanagara district was created in August 2007 when JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister of the state.

Karnataka Cabinet on Friday approved the renaming of Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South. Informing about the decision, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said that keeping in mind the 'brand Bengaluru' the state government has taken this decision.

"It is because of the aspirations and representations made by people's representatives and people at large...It is to get the Brand Bengaluru name. Bengaluru is a brand, you can't say 'no' to that. If it helps everyone, it is fine," he said. However, the minister clarified, it is only change of name and the rest of the taluks will remain the same.

"Revenue department will start the process to notify the same and only the name of district will change," he clarified.
