Prashant Makanur, the convenor of BJP Karnataka's Social Media Cell, was summoned by city police on Thursday regarding a social media post allegedly targeting members of the SC and ST communities. Makanur was released on bail after obtaining anticipatory bail, while BJP President J P Nadda and the party's IT cell national head, Amit Malviya, were also issued summons in connection with the incident.
Key details
Makanur was summoned for inquiry and subsequently released on bail. The summons were issued based on a complaint filed by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) with the Election Commission and police, alleging a violation of the model code of conduct.
The complaint cited a video uploaded on a social media platform, allegedly by the official account of Karnataka State BJP, operated by Malviya. The video, posted on May 4, depicted animated characters of Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The video allegedly portrayed members of the SC, ST, and OBC communities as "eggs" in a nest, while suggesting Rahul Gandhi planted a large egg representing the Muslim community. It depicted funds being allocated to the Muslim community while excluding the SC, ST, and OBC communities.
Legal action
Makanur, Nadda, Malviya, and Vijayendra, BJP Karnataka President and Social Media in-charge were booked under sections of the Representation of People Act and section 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to statements promoting enmity between classes.
Response from KPCC
The KPCC's complaint highlighted the offensive nature of the video and its portrayal of marginalised communities, demanding action against those responsible for its creation and dissemination.
The incident underscored the importance of responsible social media usage, especially during sensitive political periods, to avoid perpetuating divisive narratives.
