'Criteria fixed for picking candidates for 2024 Lok Sabha candidates,' says DK Shivakumar

DK Shivakumar had earlier hinted that Congress' list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls is likely to be finalised before January as the Congress is expecting many BJP leaders to join party following BJP and JD(S) alliance.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday said that Congress is soon going to finalise names for 2024 elections from the state. For the same purpose, ministers have been sent to respective districts and also that some criteria have been fixed for the selection of candidates. Earlier, Shivakumar had claimed that following the BJP and JD(S) deciding to forge an alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, several leaders from both parties have contacted him expressing their displeasure and wanting to join the Congress party.

"We have already sent the ministers to the respective districts. They will report to us. About 75% of our workers, MLAs and local leaders have collected their opinions. Delhi leaders have given us some guidance and based on that, we have fixed some criteria for the selection of candidates," Shivkumar said.

On infighting

"Where is the discontent in our party? There is discontent in the BJP, and because of that, they are not able to choose their leaders. Have you seen any state or country where the Leader of the Opposition has not been elected even after five or six months have passed since the formation of the government?"

On Karnataka Day

"It has been 50 years since the state was named Karnataka. The people of the state and the government have an opportunity to celebrate this. The government has decided to celebrate the entire year. Kannada Jyoti was launched yesterday. As a continuation of this, we have organised a program in Gadag. The Chief Minister has already announced the construction of Bhuvaneshwari Bhavan on the occasion of this Golden Jubilee."
