The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially appointed RR Swain as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir until September 30, 2024. Swain, who previously held the additional charge of the DGP position, will now assume full responsibilities.
Official order
An order dated August 6 stated, "With the approval of the Competent Authority, Shri R. R. Swain, IPS (AGMUT: 1991), currently holding the additional charge of the post of Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir, is hereby appointed to the post of Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir with effect from the date of assumption of charge and till 30.09.2024 or until further orders, whichever is earlier."
Context of appointment
Swain's appointment comes amidst a recent increase in terror activities in the Jammu region. Notable incidents include an attack on an army convoy in Kathua and encounters in Doda and Udhampur. In July, the Indian Army thwarted an attack by the Pakistan Border Action Team (BAT) along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara's Machchal sector, resulting in the death of a Pakistani intruder and the loss of one Indian soldier. Four other soldiers, including a major, were injured.
Recent security developments
The Ministry of Home Affairs reported to the Lok Sabha that up to July 21, 2023, 28 individuals, including civilians and security personnel, were killed in 11 terror-related incidents and 24 counter-terror operations. The recent surge in terror activities highlights the critical nature of Swain's new role in ensuring security and stability in the region.
