Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (May 21) lauded the people of Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency “for their unbreakable commitment to democratic values” after it recorded its highest-ever voter turnout, stating that such active participation is a great trend. This comes as Baramulla, which was once militancy-infested, recorded its highest-ever voter turnout at 59 per cent on a violence-free polling day on Monday in the fifth phase of polls.

The polling booths in the constituency were buzzing with energy as voters in large numbers as they thronged to cast vote.

"Compliments to my sisters and brothers of Baramulla for their unbreakable commitment to democratic values. Such active participation is a great trend," PM Modi said in a post on X.

Modi's remarks came in response to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha's post, saying, "High voter turnout, over 58% in Baramulla Parliamentary Constituency, is very encouraging and shows the people's determination and unwavering faith in democracy. I congratulate and thank the people of Baramulla for joining the Maha Kumbh of our democracy in large numbers."

The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to all voters who voted in the fifth phase of polls and said that the support for BJP-led NDA is “getting stronger and stronger”.

“Gratitude to all those who voted in the 5th phase of the 2024 elections which concluded yesterday. The wave of support for NDA is getting stronger and stronger. The people of India have decided that they want a strong NDA government at the Centre. INDI Alliance can try any sort of votebank politics, the people will not believe them. They are totally discredited and dejected,” he said.

According to the Election Commission of India, over 60 per cent voter turnout was recorded on Monday in 49 constituencies in six states and two Union territories in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha election. Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency recorded a voter turnout of more than 58 per cent, already registering its highest polling percentage in almost four decades. The overall polling percentage of 58.17 per cent this time is second only to the 58.84 per cent turnout the constituency saw in 1984.
