National Headache Awareness Week is celebrated from June 2 to June 8 to spread awareness about the causes and treatment of different types of headaches.

What is Migraine?

A migraine is a headache that usually occurs severely on one side of the head. In migraine, people often have problems with nausea, vomiting and tile-sound. There are 4 stages of migraine and you need to understand them.

The body starts giving signals long before the migraine pain occurs. Sometimes the pain persists for the whole day or even for the whole week. This not only affects your work but also increases many types of problems in the body. Sometimes even after the pain is cured, its aftereffects remain. Migraine has four stages prodrome, aura, attack and post-drome, although not every person suffering from migraine needs to go through all these stages.

Four dangerous stages of migraine are:

  • Prodrome- In this condition, you start noticing some symptoms 1-2 days before the migraine pain. These may include upset stomach, mood swings, craving for food, stiffness in the neck, frequent urination, increased liquid in the body and frequent yawning.
  • Aura- In this, you start seeing some symptoms in the body a few hours or minutes before the migraine occurs. These symptoms are related to the nervous system. These symptoms increase rapidly in the last 1 hour. In this, symptoms like darkness in front of the eyes, seeing some bright spots and lights, blurred vision, needle-like pricking in hands and feet, weakness and numbness in one part of the body, and difficulty in speaking are seen.
  • Attack- If treatment is not received, the effect of migraine lasts from 4 to 72 hours. However, sometimes the pain can be very intense or mild. In migraine, sometimes there is severe pain on both sides and sometimes on one side of the head. At the time of pain, there is trouble with light, sound and strong smell. There is also a feeling of nausea and vomiting. A sound like a strong beat is heard in the head.
  • Post-drome- After a migraine attack, you may feel tired, confused and exhausted for up to a day. Sometimes sudden head movements can trigger the pain again for a short while.

When should you see a doctor for migraine?

If you have frequent headaches, first understand the pattern of your migraine. For this, write down when and under what circumstances the pain occurs every time. This will help you know the cause of migraine to a great extent. If the pain is severe, consult a doctor and if there is a family history, tell about it as well.
