Covid more likely to spread indoors through maskless interaction
Speaking without masks in confined spaces poses the greatest risk of spreading SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, to others, according to a study. The study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine describes how different sized respiratory droplets emitted while speaking span a continuum of sizes and can carry different amounts of virus. Most concerning are intermediate-sized droplets that remain suspended in air for minutes and can be transported over considerable distances by convective air currents.

No evidence to suggest third wave will hit children: AIIMS director
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) director Dr Randeep Guleria has said that there is no scientific evidence available, either from India or internationally, to believe that children will be badly affected during the third wave of Covid-19. He said that it is a piece of misinformation that subsequent waves are going to cause severe illness in children, adding that children have been only mildly affected in both the first and second waves.
“In the second wave, 60-70% of the children admitted to hospital had comorbidities. Healthy children did not need hospitalisation and recovered at home. There is no data or evidence, be it Indian or global, to show that children are at risk of serious infection. This is misinformation that children would be adversely affected,” Guleria said on Tuesday.

Birth cord cells can boost survival of critically ill Covid patients
Critically ill Covid-19 patients treated with non-altered stem cells from umbilical cord connective tissue were more than twice as likely to survive as those who did not have the treatment, according to a small study. The clinical trial, carried out at four hospitals in Jakarta, Indonesia, also showed that administering the treatment to Covid-19 patients with an added chronic health condition such as diabetes, hypertension or kidney disease increased their survival more than fourfold.
The findings were published in the STEM CELLS Translational Medicine. All 40 patients who took part in the double-blind, controlled, randomised study were adults in intensive care who had been intubated due to Covid-19-induced pneumonia.
Half were given intravenous infusions containing umbilical mesenchymal stromal cells, or stem cells derived from the connective tissue of a human birth cord, and half were given infusions without them.
"The survival rate of those receiving the stem cells was 2.5 times higher and climbed even more -- 4.5 times -- in the Covid-19 patients who had other chronic health conditions," said Ismail Hadisoebroto Dilogo, Professor at Cipto Mangunkusumo Central Hospital-Universitas in Indonesia.
The stem cell infusion also was found to be safe and well-tolerated with no life-threatening complications or acute allergic reactions in seven days of post-infusion monitoring, he said.

Plant, fish based diet linked with less COVID-19 severity: Study
Several studies have suggested that diet might have an important role in symptom severity and illness duration of COVID-19 infection. Plant-based diets are rich in nutrients, especially phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals, all of which are important for a healthy immune system, the researchers said. Also, fish is an important source of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, both of which have anti-inflammatory properties, they said. So, Vegetarian and fish based diets may be associated with lower odds of developing moderate to severe COVID-19 infection.
