How India fought back in the last 24 hours

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal have shown that proteins from the Covid-19 virus other than the well-known 'spike protein' can play a critical role in the infectivity of the virus.

The research, published in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, suggests that it is not enough to study spike protein alone to develop therapeutic drugs, antibodies, and entry inhibitors, since actual infectivity levels may vary significantly based on the presence of other viral proteins like the nucleocapsid (N) protein.

The cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 15.89 crore on Tuesday with more than four lakh people aged between 18 to 44 years vaccinated in the Phase-3 drive.A total of 4,06,339 beneficiaries of the age group between 18 and 44 years received their first dose of Covid vaccine across 12 states and Union Territories.

These are Chhattisgarh (1,025), Delhi (40,028), Gujarat (1,08,191), Haryana (55,565), Jammu and Kashmir (5,587), Karnataka (2,353), Maharashtra (73,714), Odisha (6,802), Punjab (635), Rajasthan (76,151), Tamil Nadu (2,744) and Uttar Pradesh (33,544).

Cumulatively, 15,89,32,921 vaccine doses have been administered through 23,35,822 sessions so far, as per the provisional report till 7 a.m. on Tuesday, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHF).

India continued to report a dip in Covid numbers with 3,57,229 fresh cases and 3,449 fatalities recorded in last 24 hours taking the total caseload to 2,02,82,833, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said here on Tuesday. It is the 13th straight day when India recorded more than three lakh cases while over 3,000 casualties have been reported for the past seven days.

India's total tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,02,82,833 with 34,47,133 active cases and a total of 2,22,408 deaths so far. According to MoHFW, a total of 3,20,289 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours after getting cured.

The health ministry said that 15,89,32,921 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 17,08,390, who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 29,33,10,779 samples have been tested up to Monday (May 3) for Covid-19, of these 16,63,742 samples were tested on Monday.

India appears to be headed for more stringent lockdowns to rein in the massive surge in deadly coronavirus infections as both medical experts and apex industry chambers are giving fresh feedbacks to the Centre. AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria has now stated that the country's health infrastructure is "stretched to the limit" and "aggressive lockdowns," like the one imposed in March last year are required in areas with positivity rates of over 10 per cent to contain the second COVID-19 wave. Dr Guleria said the ferocity with which the virus was spreading is unprecedented, and night curfews and weekend lockdowns, such as those enforced by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana and other states, were proving to be ineffectual.
