Earlier, the grand old party on Friday (September 6) announced its first list of 31 candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections, fielding wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who recently joined the party alongside fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia, from the Julana constituency. Congress fielded former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda from the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi seat.
Congress eyes wresting power from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has been in power since 2014 riding on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity. However, in the last assembly elections 2019, the tally of the BJP has been thinned, compelling it to ally with JJP. This time, Congress hopes to return to power after defeating the saffron party because JJP has severed its ties with the ruling party.
