The incident comes in the wake of a deadly canopy collapse at Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, where one cab driver tragically lost his life while eight others were injured. According to the officials, the incident occurred around 5:00 am on Friday. "Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 collapsed," said officials.

After the tragic mishappening, authorities swung into action, and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu constituted a team to probe the cause of the collapse. Meanwhile, rescue measures were taken and the DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited) spokesperson informed that all departures were temporarily suspended, and check-in counters were closed as a safety measure.

Later in the evening, Minister Naidu visited the site and said that the heavy rainfall was the reason for the collapse of the canopy. Terming the mishappening as "serious in nature", he announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. Moreover, he also announced a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the injured.
