Aadhaar number is a 12-digit random number issued by the UIDAI -- Unique Identification Authority of India-- to the residents of India. Anybody willing to enrol has to provide minimal demographic and biometric information during the enrolment process which is totally free of cost. While demographic information includes details such as Name, Date of Birth, Age, Mobile number etc, Biometric information requires ten fingerprints, two iris scans and a facial photograph. 

Aadhaar gives nationwide portability as it can be authenticated anywhere on-line. This assumes significance as people migrate from one state to another or from rural area to urban centres.

1. LOCATE AN ENROLMENT CENTER

If you wish to enrol for Aadhaar, you will be required to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Center. In case your demographic details are not up-to-date in your Aadhaar, you can get it updated by visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment Center.  Aadhaar holders children( who have turned 15) or others in need of updating Biometrcis details - Finger Prints, Iris & Photograph are required to visit an Enrolment center too. You need to get valid address proof documents.

2. CHECK STATUS

If you have recently enrolled for Aadhaar, you can easily check if your Aadhaar is generated. You will require EID (Enrolment ID) to check your Aadhaar status. The top of your acknowledgement slip contains 14 digit enrolment number (1234/12345/12345) and the 14 digit date and time (dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss) of enrolment. These 28 digits together form your Enrolment ID (EID). In case you have lost your EID, you can Retrieve Lost EID/UID. For this you will require your registered mobile number which you had declared at the time of your Enrolment.

3. DOWNLOAD AADHAAR

Download an electronic version of your Aadhaar by giving your Aadhaar number or Enrolment ID. Downloaded Aadhaar is as valid as the original Aadhaar letter.

4. RETRIEVE EID/UID

If you have to retrieve your lost UID/EID, your registered mobile number/email which you had provided at the time of enrolment is mandatory. You can also check your Email/ Mobile Number in Aadhaar to know if it is registered or not. In case you have changed your mobile number or you wish to change the registered Email you are required to get it updated in your Aadhaar as soon as possible. No documents required to be submitted for Mobile and Email update.
