Happy Puthandu 2019 to all Tamilians across the world! Puthandu - the Tamil New Year - will be celebrated on April 14. Puthandu, also known as Puthuvarusham, falls on as the first day of Tamil month Chithirai. On this day, Tamilians wish each other 'Puthandu vazthukal' (Happy New Year). The Tamil calendar has a sixty-year-cycle, each year with a unique name. The Tamil New Year 2017 will be called 'Vilambi.' A massive Puthandu celebration is held in Madurai's Meenakshi temple, Tiruchirapalli, Kanchipuram and several other places. Traditionally, people dress-up in new clothes and decorate their homes. A tray with three fruits - mango, banana and jack fruit, betel leaves and areca nut, gold/silver jewelry, and mirrors is kept in the puja room.
Now, right from Rajinikanth to Kamal Haasan and many other Tamil stars took to Twitter and wished their fans 'Happy Tamil New Year."
