Finally! Bollywood has given us a story that talks about female friendships. Veere Di Wedding featuring actresses Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Shikha Talsania and Swara Bhasker has released today. It was quite evident from the trailer that Veere Di Wedding no way depicts ‘sanskaari’ women that people are so used to watching on the silver screen. So, is this female-centric, raunchy comedy worth a watch? Let’s find out.

Story

The plot of the film revolves around four friends. Kalindi (Kareena Kapoor Khan) is getting married to Rishabh (Sumeet Vyas) and her three veeres Avni (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja), Sakshi (Swara Bhasker), Meera (Shikha Talsania) reunite for their Veere Di Wedding. As the wedding preparations begin, people are introduced to some harsh realities of these emotionally-complex ladies who are still trying to figure out life.

Review

Well, Bollywood has always projected leading ladies in a certain way. People are not used to watching actresses using cuss words. Here, Veere Di Wedding comes as a welcome change. The four childhood friends aren’t pious by any definition. They speak their heart out, they swear a lot and are stoically unrestricted when it comes to love and lust. The movie showcases these gutsy ladies with umpteen flaws, but they are not scared of wearing their susceptibilities and failures like a badge of honour.

Talking about acting, Kareena passed with distinction. It was hard to believe that she was away from acting from the past so many months. She perfectly played the role of a commitment-phobic lady, who is not keen on becoming a radiant bride. We can call her the anchor of the ship. Sonam is good as a hot-shot divorce lawyer who is a die-hard romantic. Shikha, whose family abandoned her just because she married a firangi, added to a fun-filled movie. She is likable. The surprise element of the movie was Swara. We have seen her earlier in Indian avatar. This time, she played the role of a flamboyantly rich brat, who is on the verge of divorce. It was indeed entertaining to watch her mouthing cuss words with elan.

Sumeet Vyas, the guy from the popular web series Permanent Roommates, didn’t have much to do but still, he made full use of the space that was given to him.

You can easily relate to these characters. The ladies also face similar problems like any other random girl. One has some different thoughts about wedding and there is other whose mother wants her to settle for arrange marriage just because she is 30. As in the trailer, Sonam said that even in today’s society, your qualification doesn’t make you complete. You are successful only if you are happily married. The movie deals with this in a humorous way, something that majority of girls of similar age-group will relate to.

The highlight of the film was the camaraderie of the four women. If you have been a part of a girl gang then you can surely relate to it. Their kinship looked convincing. Director Shashanka Ghosh did a decent job. He gave most of the space to Kareena and gladly she made full use of it.

In some way or the other, Veere Di Wedding will give you glimpses from many Bollywood films. Like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara or even Queen. The story is kind of predictable. In order to show modern ambitious ladies, makers even forget to show what were the professions of other three ladies. However, we should appreciate the fact that makers have attempted something like this.

Music of the film is undoubtedly good and goes well with the theme. Tareefan is already ruling the charts and Aa Jao Na crooned by Arijit Singh is a soulful melody.

The movie has flaws but sometimes a light-hearted movie like this is needed. Go, give it a watch with your veeres.
