London :Legendary singer, Robin Gibb of the British band the ‘Bee Gees', who sang ‘Stayin Alive' to the world, turning it into a dancing global gospel, succumbed to cancer at a hospital here at the age of 62. 


The song and the album hit the music world, ending the hard rock era and ushered in the time when dance music ruled supreme.

But Robin lost his battle against cancer of the colon and the liver last night in Chelsea hospital here, leaving Barry as the sole surviving member from the group, which has more than 6000 hits.

A family statement said, “The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

Robin was the second disco-era star to die this week.  Donna Summers, who earned the Queen of Disco title by singing the ‘Last Dance' died of cancer in Florida on Thursday. 

As part of Bee Gees, short for Brothers Gibb also created dance floor classics like the ‘Night Fever', ‘Jive Talking' and the cover version song of the Saturday Night Fever which remains instantly recognised more than 40 years after its release.

The Bee Gees were born in England but raised in Australia and began their career in the musically rich 1960s, but it was only their sound track for the 1977 movie ‘Saturday Night Fever' that shot them into fame.
