Businessman Raj Kundra, arrested in a case related to alleged creation of pornographic films and publishing them through some apps, was on Tuesday remanded in police custody till July 23 by a Mumbai court, after the crime branch alleged he was making financial gains through this illegal business. The police claimed there were several WhatsApp chats that revealed Kundra (45), the husband of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty, was involved in the financial dealings of the app and its contents.

The police also said three women have come forward with complaints in the case, saying they were "forced to act in pornographic movies".

The accused persons took advantage of struggling models, actors and other workers, and made them work in these pornographic movies, the police said, adding that these movies were shot in rented bungalows in Mumbai.

The Mumbai police on Monday arrested Raj Kundra (45), the husband of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty, saying he appears to be the "key conspirator" in the case of the creation of pornographic films and publishing them through apps. Gandii Baat fame actress Gehana Vasisth, who is out on bail in connection to the same case recently released a statement.

Actress Poonam Pandey has issued a statement on businessman Raj Kundra's arrest in pornography-related case. She said, "At this moment my heart goes out to Shilpa Shetty & her kids. I can’t imagine what she must be going through. So, I refuse to use this opportunity to highlight my trauma."

"The only thing I’ll add is that I have filed a police complaint in 2019 against Raj Kundra and subsequently registered a case at the honourable high court of Bombay against him for fraud & theft. This matter is sub judice, hence I would prefer to limit my statements. Also, I have full faith in our police & the judicial process" she added in reference to a criminal case filed by Poonam against Raj Kundra and his associates.

Poonam had even earlier filed a complaint against the firm and Raj stating that businessman and his associates were illegally using content featuring her even after termination of her contract.

Shilpa Shetty's husband Raj Kundra was arrested on Monday night in a pornography-related case and was produced before the Esplanade Court on Tuesday afternoon. The businessman has been sent to judicial custody till July 23.

The Mumbai Police said they arrested Raj Kundra 'as he appears to be the key conspirator of this'. The police also said they have "sufficient evidence" against him, though they added that further investigations are in progress.

In the latest development against Raj Kundra, certain WhatsApp chats are said to be the 'key piece of evidence' of his involvement in making pornographic content and publishing them through mobile applications.

Soon after his arrest, Raj Kundra was taken for medical examination at JJ hospital by the Property Cell of Mumbai Police's Crime Branch. On Tuesday, Raj Kundra will be produced before the court.

Mumbai police have arrested one more person in connection with the case of creation of pornographic films and publishing them through apps, an official said on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Ryan Thorpe, was arrested from his office on Monday night along with businessman Raj Kundra after an enquiry into the matter, the police official said.

According to sources, Thorpe was working on a senior position with an app firm.

Earlier, the police on Monday arrested Kundra (45), the husband of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty, and said he appears to be the "key conspirator" of the case.

Earlier, in February this year, Gandii Baat fame actress Gehana Vasisth was arrested by the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police for shooting pornography videos and uploading the same on her website. 

Now, a statement released by Gehana Vasisth's publicist, Flynn Remedios on Raj Kundra's arrest, said "The law will take its course. We have full faith in the Mumbai police, which is doing a good job. The courts will eventually decide during the trial as to who are the real culprits, and which accused were merely used, by others. Further to this, I don't want to comment anymore, as I am on bail in the same cases and I do not want to prejudice or impair my right to my personal defence. However, the police should investigate fully as there are many more skeletons in the cupboards."

Gehana is out on bail now. She had allegedly stated before investigators that she decided to participate only because big names like Raj Kundra were involved.

"There was a case registered with the Crime Branch Mumbai in February 2021 about creation of pornographic films and publishing them through some Apps. We’ve arrested Mr Raj Kundra in this case on 19/7/21 as he appears to be the key conspirator of this. We have sufficient evidences regarding this," Mumbai police commissioner said in a statement.

The case was registered on February 4 at the Malwani police station in suburban Mumbai. An FIR was registered against Kundra after a woman approached the police and made certain allegations in her complaint, another official said.

"On that basis, the FIR was registered and the case transferred to the Crime Branch. Earlier also, we had registered cases related to pornography in which an actress and some other persons were made accused," he said.

"We will conduct a probe into the case against Raj Kundra and find out if there is any link between this and pornography cases which we had registered earlier," the official said.

Kundra was booked under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 34 (common intention), 292 and 293 (related to obscene and indecent advertisements and displays), and relevant sections of the IT Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, he said.

Further investigation was underway, the official added.
