Legendary actor Farooque Shaikh would have turned 71 today. The actor, who was known for his natural acting and easy charm had always stood out from his contemporaries. Born in a small village of Gujarat, Farooque Shaikh grew up in Mumbai, setting out to pursue a career in law, just like his father, until he identified his true calling in the cine world. Shaikh was not only a proficient movie actor, but his contribution to the world of television and theatre has also been equally appreciated. On the death of the actor, BBC had reported, "Farooque Shaikh had a style of his own - humble yet assertive, straightforward but polite, and his warmth both on and off screen was hard to miss."
Shaikh got his first break in M S Sathyu's landmark film Garam Hava (1973), which addressed the plight of a North Indian Muslim businessman and his family in the period after the partition of India in 1947. In the early years of 2000, Farooq hosted the popular entertainment/biographical show on the lives of actors called Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai on TV.

Umrao Jaan was directed by Muzaffar Ali. The film starred Bollywood actress Rekha and Farooq Shaikh in lead roles.

The film was directed by Sagar Sarhadi, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Farooq Shaikh, Smita Patil and Supriya Pathak.The film highlighted the tragedy of young girls being sold by needy parents to affluent Indians in the Gulf.
