Veteran actor Dilip Kumar admitted to Lilawati Hospital

Mumbai: Veteran Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar was admitted to Lilawati Hospital in Mumbai on Sunday after he complained of uneasiness. A statement issued by the COO of Lilawati Hospital Dr Narendra Trivedi said, there was no cause of concern. "Dilip Kumar was admitted to Lilawati Hospital in suburban Bandra on Sunday night. The 90 year old actor was brought to the hospital at 8:45 pm. He had complaints of breathlessness, said sources. " He ( Dilip Kumar) was brought to the hospital around 9:00 Pm. "He reportedly had breathing problems and he has been admitted to the intensive care unit ( ICU). "He is under the care of cardiologists. However there is no cause of concern. He is absolutely stable and he has been kept in the ICU just for observation", says the statement by Dr Trivedi.The 91-year-old actor has been facing several ailments. Because of old age, the thespian needs help in his day-to-day routine movements.Born on December 11, 1922 in Peshawar, Yusuf Khan (his real name) entered Bollywood in the Forties to become the Tragedy King ten years later. He was introduced to Bollywood by the then star actress Devika Rani and made his debut with Jwar Bhaata (1944) which did not do well at the box office. Dilip Kumar broke into the big league with his first hit film Jugnu three years later. His co-stars were the famous Pakistani singer-cum-actress Noor Jehan and Shashikala.This was followed by big hits 'Shaheed' (1948) with Kamini Kaushal, Mela the same year with Nargis, and Andaaz, which featured Dilip with Raj Kapoor and directed by Mehboob Khan.The Fifties saw Bollywood dominated by the Big Three - Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. Dilip's hit movies were Babul, Deedar, Aan, Footpath, Devdas, Yahudi and Azaad. He worked with co-stars Meena Kumari, Nargis, Vyjayantimala and Nimmi.His film Aan (1952) was remarkable. Directed by Mehboob Khan, it featured Nimmi and debutante Nadira. Dilip Kumar's star role in Devdas (1955) by Bimal Roy was a milestone in his career with co-stars Vyjayantimala (Chandramukhi) and Suchitra Sen (Paro).Dilip Kumar continued to reign with hit movies like Naya Daur, the great seminal blockbuster Mughal-e-Azam, Ram and Shyam (1967) and Gopi (1970). In the Eighties, he made a comeback as a major character artiste in Kranti (1981), Vidhaata, Shakti, Mazdoor and Mashaal. His film Karma directed by Subhash Ghai was well appreciated. Subhash Ghai's other film Saudagar (1991) say two titans Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar clash in stellar roles on screen.Dilip Kumar was conferred the highest Bollywood honour Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1994. He won Filmfare awards eight times for best acting in Daag, Azad, Devdas, Naya Daur, Kohinoor, Leader and Ram aur Shyam.
