Mumbai, Aug 14: The man who made the word Yahoo popular in Indian homes once said that often people used to ask him whether he owned the Yahoo internet search engine and portal.
In an interview to BBC Hindi service, Shammi Kapoor described how the word Yahoo was coined.
“It was not in the film Junglee, but in the film Tumsa Nahin Dekha, where the hero does a bhangra while following a heroine, runs after her, slips and falls, and when he gets hold of the heroine shouts Yahoo! to express his joy. I repeated Yahoo in Nasir Husain's dil Deke Dekho, and in Junglee, I did the famous number Yahoo, Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahey.
“It was nothing Tarzan-like.only an expression of joy..The interesting part was that when Jerry Young and David came to Mumbai to launch Yahoo India, they gave a party and invited me. They had hired a band which played the Yahoo song as I entered. I asked the hosts, why this number, and they said, we have told everybody here this unique style of expressing one's love (Yahoo!) is yours.
“You will be surprised to hear that many people including some in my family believe that I own Yahoo company. Once my nephew Randhir also asked me Uncle, you didn't tell us you own Yahoo company, I replied; had I owned Yahoo company, I won't have been sitting here, I would have been in the US.”
