Bathinda: Popular Punjabi singer Dharampreet committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan at his residence in Bathinda late on Sunday night. He was 38.
His mother Balvir Kaur said that Dharampreet was upset due to downfall in his career.
“For last few days, he often said that this fan will take my life,” she said.
A native of Bilaspur village in Moga, Dharampreet was living at Bathinda's Bharat Nagar area for the past 15 years.
The singer had returned home after a show in Amritsar on Sunday. His wife Mandeep Kaur and 11-year-old son were not at home when the singer took this extreme step.
Balvir said that she called neighbours for help after Dharampreet did not open the door till 10 am. When the door was opened, Dharampreet was found dead.
Bathinda Cantonment station house officer Harpreet Singh said, "No suicide note has been found from the body. The family has not complained about anybody's involvement in the incident."
Dharampreet released his first audio album in 1993, which soon made him a household name in rural Punjab. Over his decade-long career Dharampreet released around 15 albums.
'Aa lae pyar nishani chhalla mori na,' 'Tutte dil ni jurde' and 'Khatra hai sohanya nu dil naal khed di rahi' were some of his popular songs.
