Movie review: David

Hailed for the movie ‘Shaitan', Bejoy Nambair is back after two years with ‘David'. The expectations were high and so when we got the chance to sit through the show we too were in anticipation to watch what we had expected.The story is divided into three eras 1975, 1999 and 2010. Neil Nitin Mukesh is David, South star Vikram is David and Canadian actor Vinay Virmani who was earlier seen in ‘Speedy Singh' is once again David.The three are the protagonists in their own life. Neil David is raised by Ghani, a dreadful and a very powerful gangster who showers him with all his love, something which his biological son is deprived of. For him, the world starts and ends with his father-figure Ghani. But when he faces the bitter truth regarding this man, is left stunned and is in hunt for the truth.Vinay David in 1999 in Mumbai is a street musician wants to know why only his Christian father was victimized by political group.Lastly Vikram David in 2010 in Goa is a drunkard and he wants to marry Roma played by Esha Shervani. But a trouble here is that she is already engaged to his friend and is about to marry in ten days.The three characters with the same name David, what is behind their identity? How the stories of all three link up together or will it be? The story deals with these few questions.The story goes back and forth. Bejoy Nambair, like his earlier ‘Shaitan' is quiet successful in creating some thrilling moments, especially in the 70's and 90's era. It's a sheer art work by the director. But the end doesn't quiet convince you. The high voltage drama, tension and gripping moments prevail at numerous occasions.In 1975 where small Muslim groups played a vital role in driving their followers to fight for their right, the brutality of small and big gangster is nicely portrayed.Taking a dig at political group who targets common middle class people for their greedy aims, Bejoy portrays the suffering and the rage of those protagonists who by and by fights, then falls and once again hits back. But surrenders before the ‘Chalta Hai Attitude' and forgets as if was a bad dream.Bejoy despite his engaging storyline and building a great plot altogether fails to connect the three stories. It just seems the lazy attitude on the script which is really disappointing when you hope after a good start. Vikram's part in Goa infact seems totally irrelevant. The climax holds a surprise but as long as you get convinced with that.Neil is reserved, powerful, and looks calm and composed in his act. His performance seems progressing and among the three he proves to be a solid performer. He has less dialogues but his body language speaks volumes.Vinay's character suits him and as a middle class struggler one street musician would love to connect himself with his. It's mostly seen such an artist doesn't want to know about the rules and regulation of the society. He wants to lead a free life. Vinay is that guy.Vikram looks great as a drunkard who doesn't even hesitate to hit a woman. But somewhere his role is overshadowed by the above two characters. Though whatever he gets is amusing and entertaining. The conversation with his dead father who pops up every then and now is absorbing.Monica Dorga as Neil's love interest is beautiful and she excels in her performamce.The deaf and mute Esha Sherwani looks cute. Tabu as Mukesh David's adviser in his love story is raw in her behavior. Lara Dutta doesn't have too much as she learns playing guitar and also feels fallen for Vinay David, but disappoints in whatever she has.While the actors like Satish, Kaushik, Saurab Shukla and Sarika seems wasted in their part.Music Director Prashant Pillai and Mikey McCleary have done a commendable job. The backround score is nicely merged with the scenes and perfectly adds to its weightage which is admirable.While in the first half there is a sequence of numerous songs at every ten minutes which might irritate you, as it is felt that the songs composed are forcibly being utilized. Among them the theme song titiled ‘Gum Huye' and ‘Tere Mere Pyar Ki' are worth listening and not to forget ‘Mast Kalandar' which is on the charts.In so many appreciations, if I don't mention Editor A. Sreekar Prasad's name, then it would be unjustifiable. The back and forth scenes are nicely kept in their places giving none to tickle his or her head.I will go with 3 stars for Bejoy's stylish and innovative ‘David'. The message delivered ‘Being bad is good and being good is bad occasionally' would make you think does it really suit to the three stories connected in an improper manner.
