New York: Reacting to the criticism about her absence from her constituency Mathura, actor-politician Hema Malini claims she is "working for my people wherever I am" and that she will always stick to her commitment of facilitating progress in the Uttar Pradesh town.

The actress, who is on her way back to Mumbai from New York, took to Twitter to clarify her stance after seeing the "clamour against" her on the micro-blogging site.

Angered voters from her constituency have reportedly put up "missing" posters of her in the city.

But Hema said: "I am told that the campaign against me is the work of some disgruntled people in the constituency. I am not worried! My conscience is clear. I am working for my people wherever I am."

Describing herself as a "committed person", she said she will "always stick" to her commitments because that is her nature.

Members of Parliament (MPs) often turn oblivious to the problems in their constituency, but Hema claimed: "Where others make empty promises, I will go ahead & honour the promises I made to the people of Mathura.

"My commitment for 'vikas' (progress) stands. And I am not doing this for dikhawa. I will show that I am a person of values - I have been given that kind of an upbringing & I will live it."

Hema says it was her prior commitment that took her to the US.

A successful danseuse, she was in the US for her performances and said she had committed to the trip in 2013. While in the US, she has tried to work out ways to bring about progress in Mathura.

"I have achieved so much for Mathura here. Highly qualified eye doctors are ready to set up camps in Mathura. I have told u abt the Trust. Bk in India I have to start its counterpart so that funds can be remitted for Mathura's vikas," worte the actress now on her way to India via London.

"(Nitin) Gadkariji tells me that the road improvement will start getting funds frm the Centre now. We have to identify impt roads for the project. I have fixed up an office in Mathura frm where I will be functioning. Identifying a residence also. Soon all the spadework will bear fruit," she tweeted Thursday.

The rising inflation rate has become a matter of concern for people in her region who blame the government for adding to their woes, but Hema blames drought for the price rise.

"What makes u think that prices are high only in Mathura? This is a nation wide phenomenon & every one is suffering. The drought the country is facing is responsible for the rise in prices - not any MP or govt.! Am I in charge of the weather also?"
