New Delhi: Thespian Dilip Kumar has been admitted to Lilavati Hospital on Saturday for treatment of pneumonia after he complained of cough and cold.

"Dilip Kumar has been admitted for pneumonia. He is suffering from cough and cold. We have put him on antibiotic treatment. He is not in ICU," Dr Jalil Parkar of Lilavati Hospital.

Sources as quoted by leading daily said that the yesteryear superstar was afflicted with a condition known as broncho pneumonia in both his lungs. The ailment involves acute inflammation of the walls of the bronchioles – the passageways by which air passes through the nose or mouth to the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs – apparently due to bacterial infection.

In a chest infection case as that of Dilip Kumar's, the air passage ways that deliver air to the lungs swell up causing the infection.

The thespian who will turn 92 in a few days, was hospitalised in Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital, for a chest infection. A leading daily reported that the actors condition is not serious.

A hospital source was quoted as saying that the actor was just suffering from a cold for a few days and has been kept under observation in a private room.
