Mumbai, Jun 23 : Actor Riteish Deshmukh, who will yet again tickle the funny bone of the audience with his upcoming film ‘Double Dhammal', says he did try to come out of the comedy but his fans kept pushing him back into the genre as it works for him at the box office.

“I did try to come out of the genre (comedy). But audience put me back in this genre. I did ‘Rann'.. no one went to see it, I did ‘Aladin'.. they did not bother about it. So when you try to do something different unfortunately the films don't work. It is like....I did four different kinds of films and all of them did not do well. I had four back-to-back flops,” Riteish told PTI.

“Then ‘Houseful' came which was successful, the latest I did is ‘Faltu', a youth film. So whenever I do comedy films it works at the box office and other films besides comedy that I do does not work,” he said.

The actor made his debut with K Vijaya Bhaskar's film ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam' in 2003 but it was Indra Kumar's comedy ‘Masti' (2004) that brought him recognition. He has mainly taken on comic and a few serious roles.

Riteish has appeared in several comedy films like ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum', ‘Malamaal Weekly', ‘Apna Sapna Money Money', ‘Heyy Babyy', ‘Dhamaal' and ‘Housefull'.

The 32-year-old actor had also tried his hands on serious and romantic roles in films like ‘Fight Club', ‘Darna Zaroori Hai', ‘Rann', ‘Aladin', ‘Cash', ‘Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai'. But all of them failed to create magic at the box office.

“You tend to do different things but it does not work. I did ‘Jaane Kahan Se...' it was romantic film but it did not work. I did action in ‘Rann', ‘Aladin'. For action films it requires certain kind of filmmakers to figure out whether you can do something or not. Even ‘Cash' did not work. I feel every film has a right time,” Riteish said. When asked about doing solo projects, Riteish said, “It is not about solo lead films. If I was Salman Khan I would have done solo film every day but I am not Salman so I have to figure out how to go about it.”

Now, Riteish, will be seen in ‘Double Dhamaal', a comedy film and a sequel to the 2007 film ‘Dhamaal'.Directed by Indra Kumar, ‘Double Dhamaal' stars Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Riteish, Javed Jaffery and Aashish Chaudhary from the prequel, with actresses Mallika Sherawat and Kangna Ranaut as the new additions.

About the film, Riteish says, “Everything is double in the film, the fun, entertainment, jokes, sets, music, glamour and everything else. The first film ended on saying that doing charity is a good thing while in the second part the film begins saying that doing charity is not a good thing.”

The actor clarifies that neither of us—Arshad Warsi,Javed Jaffery, Aashish Chaudhary nor me is romantically involved with Kangana and Mallika. The film releases this Friday. PTI
