Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court, challenging a notice issued to him by the Competition Commission for allegedly forming a cartel of film producers. Khan was in the forefront of film producers' row with owners of multiplex theatres over the revenue sharing formula.

The dispute later ended but in the meanwhile, multiplex owners' association had moved the Competition Commission, complaining that Khan and others had formed a "cartel", which violated Competition Act, 2002. The Act seeks to prevent trade practises hampering competition.

Aamir, along with several other Bollywood producers, had taken on multiplex owners who were demanding 50 per cent share of the film's box office earnings.  The petition will be heard next month.

Cartel, as per the Act, means "an association of producers, sellers, distributors, traders or service providers who, by agreement amongst themselves, limit, control or attempt to control the production, distribution, sale or price of, or, trade in goods or provision of services". PTI
