Bollywood's ten big tragic suicides

New Delhi: Behind the glitter of Bollywood's marquee is a world of depression found too often among stars, mostly actresses, who, when coming to the brink, opt to take their own lives. 1.Guru Dutt----:Guru Dutt was the first among Bollywood stars who committed suicide due to a combination of excessive alcohol and sleeping pills on October 10, 1964. He had a raging love affair with Waheeda Rehman and a running quarrel with his wife Geeta Dutt. Before his suicide, Guru Dutt reportedly wanted to meet his children, but was not allowed to. The famed director ended his life. 2.Parveen Babi--:Actress Parveen Babi, 55, committed suicide on January 20, 2005. She however died in her sleep in Mumbai, and had complications from diabetes. Police ruled out any foul play. 3.Divya Bharti--:Divya Bharti, 19, fell to her death from her husband's apartment building in Mumbai on April 5, 1993. Police investigated the case and closed it after five years, as it could not reach a conclusion as to whether it was an accidental death, suicide or murder. 4.Silk Smitha----:Silk Smitha, 35, the girl from the South with the "thundering thighs" committed suicide in Chennai on September 23, 1996. Failure in love, alcoholism and depression and financial losses were said to be the reasons behind her suicide. 5.Nafisa Joseph----:Nafisa Joseph, 25, a model-turned-TV actor, and niece of Sharmila Tagore hanged herself to death in Mumbai on July 29, 2004. She took this extreme step as her forthcoming marriage was called off. 6. Reema Kapadia---:Reema Kapadia, younger sister of Dimple Kapadia, committed suicide under mysterious circumstances in London. She had acted opposite Rakesh Roshan and Marc Zuber in the film Haveli in 1985. 7.Manmohan Desai----:Director Manmohan Desai, 57, committed suicide on March 1, 1994, by jumping from his building in Khetwadi near Grant Road, Mumbai. He was suffering from chronic back pain. 8. Varsha Bhosle-----Varsha Bhosle, daughter of famous singer Asha Bhosle committed suicide in Mumbai on October 8, 2012. Family sources said, she was mentally imbalanced at the time of death. 9. Gitanjali---:Gitanjali, second wife of actor Navin Nischol committed suicide by hanging in Mumbai on April 22, 2006. Navin Nischol and his brother Pravin were arrested for abetment to suicide, but were later acquitted. Chitra Singh10.Monica Chaudhary-Dutt---:Monica Chaudhary-Dutt, 50, daughter of famous ghazal singer Chitra Singh from her first marriage, committed suicide by hanging in Mumbai on Mary 30, 2009. Chitra had later married ghazal singer Jagjit Singh. They lost their only son Vivek in a road accident in Mumbai in 1990.
