New Delhi: Ever since social media has virtually taken over society, sharing every single moment of one's life on social networking sites has become a trend.

Even our favourite Bollywood stars are obsessed with social media and share regular updates with their fans on several platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

While fans do get excited to see the updates from their favourite B-town celebrity, often a simple post by these celebs sparks a controversy and even ends up making them a target of abuse.

This is quite evidently seen on Twitter, where the Twitterati troll various celebrities. Here we bring you a list of Bollywood actresses who got trolled on Twitter:

Sonam Kapoor

Actress Sonam Kapoor recently got trolled on social media after she put forward her views on the meat ban imposed in Mumbai.

Reportedly, Mumbai's civic body has prohibited the sale or slaughter of meat for four days starting Friday following a Jain festival.

Sonam, who is known for speaking up her mind, boldly expressed her views on the issue as she tweeted, “Our country is going to remain a 3rd world nation because of the intolerant misogynistic close minded few.”

Little did she know that her tweet would make her the butt of many jokes. Sonam Kapoor's opinion on the meat ban wasn't welcomed by several people on the social networking site.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma recently had a hard time on Twitter after she made a tweet mourning the death of former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

The actress spelt Kalam's name incorrectly in a post on Twitter that read: “Very sad to hear about the passing of ABJ Kalam Azad. Loss of an inspiring visionary and a wonderful soul. May his soul RIP."

The ‘Band Baja Baraat' actress soon realised her mistake and did try to rectify it. However her attempt went in vain as she got President Kalam's name wrong once again.

Anushka again tweeted, “Very sad to hear about the passing of APJ Kalam Azad. Loss of an inspiring visionary and a wonderful soul. May his soul RIP.”

It was in her third attempt that she finally got the name correct but by then the Twitterati had noticed the blunder and trolled her mercilessly on social media.

Sonakshi Sinha

The Dabangg girl Sonakshi Sinha is one of the common targets of Twitter trolls. Recently the actress came across a rude question asking “Why are you so ugly?” The incident happened when she started a trend with the hashtag #sonasays on Twitter as she invited questions from her fans.

While Sonakshi made her best attempt to answer all the questions, she turned a bit witty when she replied to this one.

Shruti Seth

In June 2015, PM Narendra Modi initiated the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana” and launched a social media campaign where he asked parents to tweet photos of themselves with their daughters with #SelfieWithDaughter. The motive was to stop female foeticide and highlight the importance of girls and women.

While the heart-warming parent-daughter selfies went viral on Twitter, the campaign also invited controversy after actress Shruti Seth commented about the campaign.

Shruti tweeted, “A selfie is not a device to bring about change Mr. PM Try reform. #selfieobsessedPM”.

She also made another tweet saying, “Those defending the #selfie plan by the PM FYI change is needed in the illiterate parts where ‘no front facing camera phones exist'. “Think Seriously” get over your selfie obsession Mr. PM. Be more than a photograph. Come on!”

The actress faced backlash from the Modi supporters for her criticism on the social networking site with most of the comments being abusive and personal against Shruti.

Although Shruti deleted her tweet after the controversy, she posted an open letter on Twitter mentioning "as for my initial reservation about the initiative being nothing more than eyewash, I am deeply saddened to see that, in the end, I was proved right."

Alia Bhatt

Remember the famous episode of ‘Koffee with Karan' where Karan Johar was seen questioning the then newbies of Bollywood – Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra.

This episode of the show probably got the highest TRPs because of the special element -  Alia Bhatt's answers in the ‘Koffee Quiz' round.

The general knowledge-deficient Alia grabbed all the eyeballs after she named Prithiviraj Chavan as the President of India.

And this was it for the actress as the Internet, especially the social networking sites, was taken by storm with numerous jokes on Alia Bhatt which went viral instantly.

Neha Dhupia

Actress Neha Dhupia has been a victim of Twitter trolls as well. When the monsoon hit Mumbai, the actress took to the social networking site to express herself about the condition of the city after heavy rains lashed it.

The actress tweeted, "One rain n the city comes to a standstill. Good governance is not about selfies n makin us do yoga, it's making sure ur citizens r safe."

This sparked a controversy and soon the actress faced flak over her tweet.

While the Twitterati got personal and spoke about her "non-existent career", BJP workers held protests outside her house.

After facing a backlash from Modi supporters, the actress clarified that she didn't intend to hurt anyone's sentiments and that it was the mere frustration of a helpless citizen of Mumbai.

She mentioned that she does support the government's Yoga Day and Swachh Bharat Campaign and also hopes that her appeal to improve the civic amenities in the city will be taken in the right way.

Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu had posted a picture on her Twitter account, in which two girls were tying her shoelaces, with a tweet saying, "I need to learn to tie shoe laces ASAP! Embarassed that I can't! No patience.. grrrrr! Promise I am not spoilt! Will learn soon."

This tweet of hers garnered a lot of bad responses with angry followers criticizing her act and saying she was promoting child labour.

Later, Bips clarified that the two girls were her sister and friend and not anyone's children.
