Mumbai: Adnan Sami is rejoicing in his "New Year gift" in the form of Indian citizenship and the noted singer says he has finally made it home after a long journey.
Born in Britain with roots tracing to Pakistan, Sami was a Canadian citizen. He expressed his feelings by quoting a line from the 1982 film "Gandhi".
He tweeted: "'I've traveled so far. And all I've done is come back...home.' (Quote from the movie 'Gandhi') #sotrue #Icanrelate."
He was granted citizenship after he made a representation to the home ministry on May 26 requesting for it on humanitarian grounds.
The New Year started on a good note for Sami as he was given the certificate of Indian citizenship on Friday. He then took to the micro-blogging site to share that with the certificate comes "A new beginning. A new feeling. A new belonging. A new love affair. A new country. Jai Hind."
Sami became a sensation in the country with hit songs like "Kabhi to nazar milao" and "Lift karaa de", and he made ripples in Bollywood in 2015 with "Bhar do jholi", which featured in Salman Khan's "Bajrangi Bhaijaan".
