Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi’s Why Cheat India continues to struggle at the box office. Facing tough competition from Vicky Kaushal’s Uri: The Surgical Strike, the film opened to disappointing figures of Rs 1.71 crore. The weekend didn’t help the film either. On Sunday, Why Cheat India earned Rs 2.64 crore taking the total box collection to Rs 6.80 crore.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “#WhyCheatIndia cuts a sorry picture... Witnessed [minimal] growth after a lacklustre start, but not enough to salvage the situation... Fri 1.71 cr, Sat 2.45 cr, Sun 2.64 cr. Total: ₹ 6.80 cr. India biz”.

The movie was earlier titled Cheat India but after objection, it was changed to Why Cheat India. The movie which is a satire on the education system exposes harsh reality of India. Directed by Soumik Sen, it has been produced by Bhushan Kumar, Tanuj Garg and Atul Kasbekar. It is Emraan Hashmi's maiden production venture.

Why Cheat India is about education racket and scams in several entrance exams. Hashmi features as the kingpin of the racket, Rakesh Singh. He has a team of brilliant students who write exams for other candidates seeking admission in good institutes. In return, he takes only cash with full guarantee of the seat. Emraan's character believes that rich and powerful do scams, hard work is just for salaried people. He has no qualms about his work. In fact, he has Robinhood-like attitude as he feels he is only helping needy students by giving them money.
