Thugs of Hindostan proved to be a complete dud at the box office as fans renounced the film due to lack of original script and a lot more. Despite being made on a humongous budget of Rs 300 crores, this Aamir Khan’s film has managed to reach only Rs 145 crore mark at the box office. While the film continues its dying course at the box office, the exhibitors have decided to demand a refund from the makers. According to a Mid-Day report, the theatre owners are now asking for compensation.

Thugs of Hindostan was made on an estimated budget of Rs 300 crore, and one of the costliest films of Indian cinema. It was supposed to be that big Diwail offering from Aamir Khan, but it bombed after critics slammed it left, right and centre. In the 11 days of its run, it has managed to make Rs 150 crores.

This could have been great numbers for any other Bollywood release, but since Thugs of Hindostan was a mega-budget and a multi-starrer film, a lot was expected from it.

The theatre owners are reportedly looking to get 50 per cent of their investment compensated from the makers.

As is the practice with YRF, the studio had taken on the distribution responsibilities. The exhibitors agreed to the minimum-guarantee deal as they expected handsome profits from the big-budget film, but the tables have turned. So, we are planning to approach the sub-distributors [YRF] to get a refund. We hope YRF, Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan will help us in this situation, else there is a possibility of a few theatres having to even shut down,” an exhibitor told Mid-Day.

Before Thugs of Hindostan, superstars like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Rajinikanth have compensated the distributors after their films tanked at the box office. SRK provided refunds for Jab Harry Met Sejal and Dilwale while Salman Khan for Tubelight.
