Abhishek Chaubey's Sonchiriya released on March 1 along with Luka Chuppi. Both the film belong to completely different genres. While one is a family entertainer, the other is a dacoit-drama. Standing true to the trade analysts' predictions, Luka Chuppi has earned more than Sonchiriya. While Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon's movie has made Rs 8.01 crore at the box office, Chaubey's film set in the ravines of Chambal has earned Rs 1.20 crore on day 1. Sonchiriya starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Ashutosh Rana and Ranvir Shorey in important roles has got rave reviews from critics.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to put up the first-day collection of Sonchiriya. He wrote, ''#SonChiriya opens to low numbers, since the screen count [720 screens]/shows are limited and also because it caters to a niche audience... Biz on Day 2 and 3 crucial... Fri ₹ 1.20 cr. India biz.''

When asked about the box office clash with Kriti Sanon's Luka Chuppi, Sushant said, ''Clash? There is no clash. It's not like in one theatre we'll have both the films playing on two walls." For unversed, Kriti and Sushant were rumoured to be dating each other during the shooting of Dinesh Vijan's Raabta.

On a related note, in an interaction, Bhumi, who plays Indumati in the film said, "The first time I heard the script, I was honestly shattered. You have these characters on their journey to find their own truth and through the narrative, Abhishek sir has commented on so many things that are still very relevant and prevalent in our society," Bhumi said at the screening.

Indiatvnews.com's film critic writes, ''The set up of Chaubey's film is as authentic it can be. The attires of his characters are dusty and worn out as if they have been in these clothes since ages. Besides unkempt hair and beard, what makes this film stand out in the crowd is the portrayal and picturisation of Chambal and the credit goes to cinematographer Anuj Rakesh Dhawan. The sound design and background score by Bendict Taylor and Naren Chandavarkar seamlessly merge into the atmosphere.'' Read full Sonchiriya review here.
